I have just returned from the trip of a lifetime in Tromso, Norway and witnessed the spectacular Aurora Borealis. This amazing light phenomenon is definitely one of the trips on most people’s bucket list.

After a short flight from Belfast City to Heathrow and onwards via Oslo we arrived in the City of Tromso, 217 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Jumping on the short airport shuttle, taking only 15 minutes into the city centre, we arrived at the Radisson Blu hotel, our base for the next 3 nights. After a speedy check in we dropped our bags in to our warm and comfortable room and went exploring the city’s sights.

Up bright and early the next morning we set off to the bus station and got our tickets for the bus to take us across the bridge to the cable car terminal. After a short and speedy climb in the cable car we arrived at the summit and the views (and snow!!) that met us were breath taking. We took a walk around the top of the mountain after making snow men and soaked up the sights below. Arriving at the bottom we took a short stroll ( or slide!!)  to the Arctic Cathedral for a look around. Jumped back on the bus and headed into town for a quick spot of dinner before we headed out to chase “the lights”.

A short walk from the hotel took us to our meeting point for the evening’s trip out to see “the lights”. After a 2 hour bus journey to the Finnish border we were greeted with the spectacular show of the Aurora for around 3 hours, before it started to cloud over. Our guide was amazing and helped set up our camera in order to capture the BEST VIEWS. We Arrived back at the hotel around 3:30 am; time for bed and a well deserved lie in.

Next day  We woke to the most amazing snow fall, so decided to venture into town for a walk around. After a bit of lunch and shopping we were back at the hotel to get ready for husky dog sledding, a short bus journey out of the city of only around 25 minutes.  After a quick change into snow suits and boots it was time to meet the dogs (over 300 of them!!) and we were lucky to meet the new arrivals of puppies (only 6 weeks old). Once we had got to know our new friends it was time to get on the sledge for the off! Yet another amazing experience, being pulled in a sledge with 9 dogs through the open with wild reindeer and moose roaming free in the picture perfect winter landscape.

Definitely one of the ‘to do list’ and I would recommend this trip of a life time to everyone.
